Winter + Spring 2015 Classes

 

I'm excited to announce that I will be teaching more Sweet Fiber classes at 88 Stitches this winter! Below you will find a brief outline of each of the classes I will be offering in February and March. You can view the whole class schedule here or in-store at 88 Stitches.

Registration must be done in person at 88 Stitches with either a cheque or cash for each individual instructor, unfortunately they cannot accept registrations over the phone. Please take a moment to review their class policies before registering. Space is limited so be sure to stop by soon! 


Blocking Your Finished Knits

Instructor: Melissa Thomson

Two Sessions Available:

Sunday, February 22 - 10am-12pm

Sunday, March 15 - 1-3pm

Blocking is an essential step in finishing your hand knits, helping to even out your stitches, soften your wool and adjust the shape or fit of a project. We’ll go over the basics of blocking natural fibres, including how to wet block and steam block your knits in this two hour hands on course. Bring along some swatches, a newly finished small project or a well loved accessory and we’ll block it together in class! Skill Level: Beginner (we won’t be knitting in this class, but you’ll need a few of your own projects or swatches knit up in natural fibres to practice blocking with)


 

Intro to Cabling: The Brae Hat

Instructor: Melissa Thomson

Sunday, March 1 - 1-3pm

Learn to knit cables in the round with confidence! This two hour class will get you started on your cabled hat, covering the basics of cable knitting and how to read both written and charted cable instructions. Skill level: Intermediate (can cast on, knit in the round, and have knit a plain hat before)

 


 

Intro to Colourwork: The Golden Pear Hat

Sunday, February 1 - 1-3pm

Join us for this quick introduction to colour work. We’ll go over the basics of stranded knitting, including how to pick colours, working with two colours at once and adjusting your gauge. Skill level: Intermediate (can cast on, knit in the round, and have knit a hat before)

 


 

Knitting in the Round: InstaCowl

Instructor: Melissa Thomson

Sunday, February 22 - 1-3pm

Learn to knit in the round with this simple garter stitch cowl and your favourite super bulky yarn. We’ll go over how to use circular knitting needles, joining your knitting in the round, knitting in the round and purling in the round. Skill Level: Confident Beginner (can knit, purl, cast-on and cast-off)

 


Lace in the Round: The Bridgeway Hat

Sunday, March 8 - 1-3pm

Learn to knit lace in the round with confidence! This two hour class will get you started on your lace hat, covering the basics of lace knitting and how to read both written and charted lace instructions. We’ll also go over how to block your finished lace hat. Skill level: Intermediate (can cast on, knit in the round, and have knit a plain hat before)

 


 

Learn to Magic Loop: Temperate Mitts

Instructor: Melissa Thomson

Sundays, February 8 & 15 - 1-3pm

Learn the Magic Loop method of knitting in the round while making a toasty pair of Temperate Mitts. We’ll also touch on cable knitting and how to create thumb gussets. Skill Level: Confident Beginner (can knit, purl, cast-on and cast-off)

 


 

Pick Your “Sweet Fiber" Project

Session 1: Sundays, February 1, 8 & 15 - 10am-12pm

Session 2: Sundays, March 1, 8 & 15 - 10am-12pm

Pick Your “Sweet Fiber” Project is a three week course where you can choose any of Melissa Thomson’s designs to work on during the duration of the class. This class is the perfect environment to explore new techniques, improve skills and learn from your classmates’ projects too! Skill Level: All levels welcome (can knit, purl, cast-on and cast-off)
